Photography by Celeste Fontein PhotographySteven Yin is a New Zealand Bonsai & Penjing hobby artist, educator, and entrepreneur with over a decade of experience promoting and modernising the art of bonsai. He is the founder of MiniGardens Bonsai NZ - one of New Zealand’s largest bonsai nurseries and has successfully operated an e-commerce bonsai business since 2013, helping introduce the art form to a wider audience.
Steven currently serves as Vice President and National Demonstrator for the New Zealand Bonsai Association and is a former President of the Wellington Bonsai Club. Through these leadership roles, he regularly demonstrates bonsai techniques and speaks at horticultural societies across the country.
His work has been featured nationally on Seven Sharp and Radio New Zealand, and in publications including The Spinoff and New Zealand Gardener. Steven also was guest demonstrator at Garden Marlborough, one of New Zealand’s premier garden festivals, and his contribution to cultural storytelling has been recognised through inclusion in the New Zealand Oral History Archive at the National Library of New Zealand.
